Fo Guang Shan (International)

Fo Guang Shan is a Buddhist monastic order founded in Taiwan in 1967 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. His philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism focuses on integrating Buddhist practices into everyday life.

Headquartered in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. FGS has since spread its wings far and wide across five continents. Today it has more than 300 branch temples globally. In addition, the footprint of FGS can be seen in various forms: there are 5 universities, 16 Buddhist colleges, 27 Fo Guang Yuan Art galleries, FGS International Translation Center,Buddha's Light TV(BLTV)and daily newspaper-Merit Times etc.

In 1991, the first FGS European branch temple in Paris, France was established and then started the propagation of Humanistic Buddhism in Europe. At present, FGS France is the headquarter of FGS Europe .The temple is situated in the religious district Bussy Saint Georges. This unique neighborhood is 'an esplanade of religions', a project recognized by UNESCO. FGS France occupies a land area of 6,750 sqm. The use of eco-friendly building material is reflected in its modern architecture. Within the compound, the essence of Buddhism is transpired through literature, art, meditation and chants, amongst others.

With FGS France as the springboard for Europe, branch temples were briskly set up in these cities: London, Manchester, Stockholm, Berlin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Vienna, Geneva, Luzern, Madrid, Barcelona and Porto. Today there are 14 FGS branch temples throughout Europe.

Through the joint effort of monastics and followers of FGS Europe, dharma propagation in Europe flourished. Humanistic Buddhism practitioners uphold the '
The Fo Guang Shan Mottoes’ in their conduct:

Offer others faith.
Offer others joy.
Offer others hope.
Offer others convenience.

The above are guided by the four principles laid down by Venerable Master Hsing Yun:

Propagating Dharma through cultural activities
Fostering talents through education
Benefiting society through philanthropic programs
Purifying human hearts and minds through Buddhist practices
