Portuguese Buddhist Union (UBP)

The Portuguese Buddhist Union (UBP) is a non-profit religious organization, officially recognized, founded on June 24, 1997, whose aims are to preserve and disseminate the Buddha's teachings. In particular, the UBP is devoted to bring together and to support Portuguese groups, organizations, communities and other congregations that are Buddhists of any its authentic traditions. It also has the purpose to increase the knowledge about Buddhism and to promote Buddhist practices and values within the Portuguese society. Furthermore, it assumes the role of intermediary facilitating the relationship between its Members and any national or international entity legally constituted, in particular the Portuguese State and other religious denominations.

In this sense, the Union develops various projects and activities, including organizing the visit of Buddhist Teachers to Portugal and activities furthering the study and practice of Buddhism, such as conferences, academic seminars and workshops. There's an ongoing project concerning the translation of classical works of Buddhist culture and philosophy, as well as the setting up of a library. Other projects include activities with children focusing on meditation and transmitting Buddhist teachings and to train and engage people as spiritual assistants who give support to prisoners in prison establishments, or to the sick and the dying. The UBP participates in working groups regarding intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, in collaboration with legislative and executive governmental bodies and public institutions. These groups often organize initiatives that are open to the public. In general, the UBP contributes to and supports any activity that minimizes the suffering of both people and animals.
